Rolex Daytona 116500LN : La Minute de l’Expert (Saison 3 Épisode 06)

Hello, today we’ll be looking at the Rolex Daytona reference 116500. Much more than a simple watch, a true icon. Pioneer in manufacturing wristwatches since 1905, Rolex began creating water-resistant watches… …such as the Oyster case and automatic movements with the Perpetual rotor. For more than a century now, Rolex watches have been at the side of adventurers, explorers… …and professional divers, but also at the wrists of car racing drivers. In 1963, the Rolex Cosmograph was born. The first water-resistant mechanical chronograph boasting excellent readability with contrasting colors. This would quickly become the famous Daytona. Ancestor of today’s model, its movement is mechanical and manual winding, housing a Valjoux 72. Whereas the reference 116500 has been equipped with the manufacture 4130 caliber. The chronograph has since grown to 40mm in diameter. We’re dealing with a Cerachrom bezel, hence extremely beautiful. The watch we have here today has been equipped with a white dial and black-lined counters…. …considered as the model with the highest degree of readability compared to the black dial. This piece is of particular interest to enthusiasts and future collectors today… …as It has taken the same aesthetic codes as the original Daytona of the 1970’s i.e. 6263 or 6240. The black bezel reminds us of these vintage timepieces, as well as the two colors of the dial: white & black. To ensure water-resistance up to 100m, both pushers and the crown are screw-down. Naturally, the chronograph comes with a classic Oyster bracelet in steel and folding Oysterlock safety clasp. This Daytona is among the most difficult timepieces to find. Production is strong, but overpowered by an even stronger demand. Its official retail price is fixed at 11,350 € and sells… …for an additional several thousand euros the instant it leaves the store. This chronograph has taken all the same aesthetic codes as the original model… …worn by Mr. Agnelli on his boat, thus launching an overall public euphoria around the Daytona. With the same colors and design, but 3 or 4 times less expensive than the original model… …this timepiece is a crowd pleaser. This Rolex Daytona 116500LN, LN for “lunette noire” (meaning “black bezel” in French)… …is one of the rare models of the watch industry that becomes a collector’s piece as soon as it exits the store. We can imagine that following the sale of Paul Newman’s watch at more than $17 million… …the next model could be, and this would be any collector’s dream, a 116500PN instead of LN. PN for “Paul Newman” of course…

  2. bon reportage.
