How to Test and Install a Smoke Alarm

The American Red Cross reminds you to check
the smoke alarms in your home monthly. And to replace the batteries once a year. Checking your smoke alarm only takes a few
moments and can provide lifesaving protection for your family. To test your smoke alarm, take these two easy
steps each month: Press the test button for 3-5 seconds
If you hear a loud beep, your alarm is working. It’s that simple! If you don’t hear a loud beep, then you
will need to replace the batteries. To change the batteries in your smoke alarm: Remove the alarm.
Take out the old battery. Replace the old battery with a new battery
of the same type. Put the alarm back in place and test the alarm
again. You should now hear a loud beep – indicating
your alarm is working. If your home doesn’t have a smoke alarm,
install one today! When selecting a location to install the new
alarm, consider these tips: Every level of the home should have a smoke
alarm, including the basement. Priority areas include: a hallway outside
of a group of bedrooms, on the ceiling at the bottom of stairways leading to the next
level and inside bedrooms or sleeping areas. Avoid placing smoke alarms in the kitchen
or outside the door to a full bathroom. Now follow these easy steps to install your
new smoke alarm: Place a sturdy ladder where you will install
the alarm. Use a drill to insert screws into the wall
to hold the alarm. Note the installation date on the back of
the alarm, then attach the alarm. Test the alarm to verify the alarm is working. Now that you know how easy it is to test and
