Baselworld 2011: The world’s biggest luxury watch fair – Breguet, Chopard, de GRISOGONO

Maria Doulton: Welcome to Baselworld, the
biggest watch and jewellery show on the planet. Here, every spring, some 100,000 people come
to see 2,000 brands presenting their newest watches and jewellery. So what’s happening
all around me are retailers from all over the world come to have meetings to see what
it is they’re going to buy and put in their display windows this year. I’ve been here for a few days already so I’ve
had a bit of a look around, and one of the things that seems to be coming through is
that this year could well be a record year for the watch and jewellery industry, with
sales expected to make up for the losses since 2008. Now, as for trends, with the watches, the
companies are still playing it safe and it’s very much about classical lines for men, clean,
simple dials and complications that are useful. Bling is out, there are less diamonds and
less outrageous propositions. With jewellery, I’ve seen lots of organic
shapes, lots of asymmetry and a return to perhaps a more discrete way to wear jewellery. But what we’re going to do now is we’re going
to go along and have a look at several of these brands and see up close what’s going
on. Over the
past week I’ve been to see many of the different
watch and jewellery houses, and in most cases spoken to the CEO about what the big story
is. I will post all 16 videos on my website in
stages, so make yourself a cup of tea and settle down to watch them all. By the end
of it, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what’s happened at Baselworld 2011. In fact, you
could even say you’ve been here yourself!
